1781년 리처드 아크라이트 Richard Arkwright가 영국 맨체스터에 세계 최초의 수력 방적공장을 설립했다.
그후 약 100년이란 세월이 흐르면서 영국 맨체스터 일대가 방적 중심지로 자리 잡았다.
