예전 직장에서 거래처를 이 책에서 만나서 반가웠다.
그는 제주에 내려오기 전 3-4년 간 제주에서 발행되는 신문을 구독했다고 한다.
읽으면 읽을 수록 제주에 가야겠다는 결심이 굳어졌다.
 
그는 가장 이상적인 모델을 일본 나가사키에서 보았다.
도시가 아닌 숲속에서 장애인과 그 가족이 편히 쉴 수 있는 통나무 집이 마련되어 있었다.
그곳에서 쉬면서 정보를 교환하고 전문가와 상담할 수 있었다.
온천과 체육시설까지 즐길 수 있었다.
 
그 후 그는 1997년 제주로 이주했다.
그가 제주에 복지시설을 개척하러 가겠다는 뜻을 품은 지 8년 만이었다.
 
하지만 제주에 와보니 신문에서 읽지 못했던 정서라는 것과 부딪쳤다.
공무원, 장애인을 둔 가족이 관심을 갖고 참여하지 않았다.
육지사람이라고 보이지 않는 막이 있었다.
그는 3년간 공무원, 장애인 가족들, 장애인 단체들과 충돌하고 설득하는 동안 힘이 다 빠졌다.
이렇게 까지 해야 하나 포기하려고도 했었다.
하지만 죽는 한이 있어도 하고야 말겠다는 의지로 결국 2000년에 사회복지법인 허가를 받았다.

I was delighted to encounter a business contact from my previous job in this book. He mentioned that for 3-4 years before moving to Jeju, he subscribed to a newspaper published in Jeju. The more he read, the more determined he became to move there.

He saw the most ideal model in Nagasaki, Japan. There, in the forest rather than the city, log houses were provided where people with disabilities and their families could rest comfortably. They could exchange information and consult with experts while staying there. They could also enjoy hot springs and sports facilities.

He then moved to Jeju in 1997. It was eight years after he had decided to pioneer welfare facilities in Jeju.

However, upon arriving in Jeju, he encountered an unspoken sentiment he hadn’t read about in the newspapers. Public officials and families of people with disabilities were not interested or involved. There was an invisible barrier because he was from the mainland. For three years, he was exhausted from clashing and persuading public officials, families of people with disabilities, and disability organizations. He even considered giving up, wondering if it was worth it.

However, with an unwavering determination to achieve his goal even if it killed him, he finally received permission to establish a social welfare foundation in 2000.

이 책을 읽기 전에는 몰랐지만 '평화의 마을'이 큰 어려움을 딪고 일어선 곳이라는 것을 알게 되었다.
지금에서야 더 대단히 느껴졌다.
장애인 시설이 없어져 가는 시대에 더 소중하게 느껴졌다.

Before reading this book, I didn't know that 'Village of Peace' had overcome great difficulties. Now, I feel even more impressed. In an era where facilities for people with disabilities are disappearing, it feels even more precious.
